Lanzarote is one of the seven Canary Islands – a Spanish owned archipelago which is situated just off the coast of West Africa. Hundreds of miles south of the Iberian Peninsula and on the same line of latitude as the Bahamas. The Canaries enjoy great weather all year round and at just four hours flying time are the closest winter sun destination to mainland Europe.
Making the islands enormously popular with tourists from countries such as the UK, Eire and Germany. During the course of 2008 Lanzarote welcomed just over 1.5 million foreign visitors. But despite these numbers the island still remains much less spoiled than larger Canarian cousins such as Tenerife. As on Lanzarote high rise buildings were banned in the 1970´s and strict planning laws have been put in place to restrict over-development.
